“-Tel”eology is an architectural research project supported by the 2026 ARKO Architecture Art Lab program of the Korea Arts Council (ARKO).

Unlike the studio apartment, its closest international counterpart, the Korean officetel has evolved into a uniquely local urban housing type. Under a single name, it has taken many forms over the last four decades: live-work offices, bachelor residences, apartment-style officetels (“apatel”), office-only units, mixed-use residential towers, and more.

Together, participants will investigate the officetel through its history, legal frameworks, advertisements, floor plans, and urban distribution. Using the officetel as a lens, we will examine how the concept of housing is defined, produced, marketed, and inhabited in contemporary Korea.

Materials generated through the workshop may contribute to future exhibitions, publications, and archival projects developed as part of the larger research initiative.
